Meet the team

We employ the best

We have over 40 staff members and growing, working from our two main operating locations of Brisbane and Perth and our satellite facilities across Australia and New Zealand.

Our team includes 13 highly qualified, experienced electrical trainers, all with Certificate IV’s in Training and Assessment, trade qualifications and at least 10 year’s practical experience in the field in which they teach. Together they offer over 250 years of combined electrical experience, which is leveraged to ensure our course materials and training aids are relevant to the real-world and incorporate industry best practice.

In addition we have 9 competency assurance specialists on staff, from varying backgrounds including defence, aviation and resources. All are highly qualified, experienced and passionate about learning and development. They provide custom training solutions for our key clients both in Australia and internationally and facilitate the development and delivery of our professional courses.

Meet Steve

Steven is an energetic innovator of training solutions and leader of teams.

A Director of Competency Training, he’s established new systems to educate students in the resources, construction, trades and large industry sector, about safety, compliance and assurance.

Steven has overseen a strong period of growth – in 2016 Competency Training is opening new training facilities and continues to broaden its range of courses in Australia and Asia in particular Korea and Malaysia.

  • Steven works directly with industry to provide training solutions – on site, in specialised training facilities and through digital channels
  • Passionate about nation building and team development, and is solutions focused in today’s limited skilled resource market
  • Clear strategies around the design, development, implementation and delivery of competency based training management systems to governments and large multinational blue-chip organisations operating within Australia and overseas
  • Hundreds of graduates now continuing their training journey through to management and leadership positions

Steven has been engaged in various training roles within the Resource, Aviation and Defence industries and has a great track record in generating significant revenues and returns to shareholders.

Meet Jay

Beginning his career with the army, Jay is a qualified and experienced learning and development professional. Time with Boeing Australia and BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina in training roles has seen Jay develop site-wide training programs, coordinate training activities and conduct training needs analysis’. Jay is in charge of western operations including Adelaide and is based in Perth.

Brendan Newell

Compliance, Development and Competency Assurance Manager
Meet Brendan

Brendan joined Competency Training as Compliance and Development Manager in 2010, taking on responsibility for RTO compliance and course development. Brendan is passionate about learning and development and his previous experience as an education and training professional is vast and varied, including time as a product support systems and training specialist with Boeing Defence Australia. Highly qualified, Brendan holds a Master of Education, Diploma of Training and Assessment and Certificates IV in Frontline Management and Training and Assessment. In 2014 Brendan also took on responsibility for our Competency Assurance business.
